I’m so glad it found you, Sherrill. I know it can be tough to make the distinction in practice, but at least it can begin with awareness. Application is inevitably messy, but there’s possibility in it. What’s interesting is that I believe we ourselves can tell on a fundamental, bodily, intuitive level when someone else’s efforts don’t land well in us, but we can’t always notice when we’re unskillful with others. I often ask myself who I am REALLY taking care of when I need someone or something to change? It’s usually me. But we can love ourselves through the messiness of it. That’s important, too.
